DTU Management Engineering has established a new service in order to encourage research-based inventions and technologies.
The Department’s Innovation Manager John Heebøll has many years of experience within the field of commercialisation, entrepreneurship and intellectual property law. Based on his professional knowledge he will advise students and employees at Department about how to manage patentable ideas and research results.
The counseling process usually begins with a meeting with the inventor where issues concerning intellectual property law and juridical issues are discussed. There will be a review of rights and obligations, and different scenarios of commercialisation will be considered. Subsequently, the inventor will be given ideas and guidance in order to develop strategies and plans for the commercialisation.
A so-called "patent course" for PhD students and employees at DTU is being offered by DTU Management Engineering every year in the second week of January. The course will give participants insight into patent law, news searching, contracts between DTU and the inventor, contracts between the licensee and the licensor, sale of licenses, commercialisation by means of starting up a business, and other different aspects connected to funding – in particular proof-of-concept and venture funding. This course is recommended to PhD students and employees who would like to get more insight into the subject of transfer of technology via licensing and spin-outs.
