The Software Development Center

The Software Development Center, SDC, was created in 2009 as a service for all the institutes on DTU.  The mission is to provide DTU with state-of-art scientific software infrastructure systems were off-the-shelf products are not available and to develop advance software applications for individuals and group of researchers, educators and consultants at DTU.

The benefits for individual researchers are best explained by a well-established concept: A software application that models a situation and simulates consequences by the use of mathematical modeling and laboratory results is professional developed together with the researcher. This application is made available for download on the Internet. The application download spreads the knowledge of research done over the Internet and provides a platform for International collaboration. Secondly the application helps increasing education, consultancy and industry research activities.

The benefits for institutes are that their software infrastructure systems are professional developed and maintained and that the cost of staff for software development and maintenance is shared by the institutes on DTU.

SDC also supports the industry in order to reduce the risk of development and to demonstrate advance application concepts. Innovative software applications have been developed together with the industry including for example:

  • Mobile phone based applications communicating with wireless sensors and servers through web services.
  • Cloud applications for data management in international organizations

SDC works on commercial terms and as such part of the Section for Data Analysis at DTU-Informatics. Therefore are quality and professionalism in always important. SDC can solve various tasks as it is backed by the competences of DTU-Informatics. The Strategy is to have a nonprofit consultancy center based on project and maintenance contracts. However in case of product developments the income of SDC may also come from software licenses.

Key qualifications are the ability for fast understanding the software needs of the various disciplines at DTU and work together with the creative and innovative persons of DTU translating their needs into usable software requirements. SDC is academically a part of the Section for Software Engineering, which is using SDC for evaluate technologies and methods under research and development.

SDC has Diploma students as trainees from the Software Engineering Section. Students may be part time employed. Students may also do their thesis in a corporation between s section in DTU-Informatics and SDC. This means that the software development center will not only offer development of software applications in product quality, but also offer prototype developments done as partly student projects.

SDC also focus on courses for the industry in software development that the students of DTU may join.
