Summer University 2012 - Telecommunication

Over the past five years, DTU Fotonik has held a Summer University school for international students for 3 weeks in July - August. It has been a great success and helped several attendees to decide to become guest students or do their MSc degree here as well.

Invitation

The Section for Communication Technology at DTU Fotonik, Department of Photonics Engineering, would like to invite international students to a short summer course in July to August as part of the DTU Summer University program. The idea is to present DTU and the especially DTU Fotonik to students that potentially would like to be guests of DTU. Guest students may be at DTU for one semester or they may be enrolled in the two year M.Sc. programs. DTU Fotonik has many international guest students as well as students in the two year M.Sc. program in Telecommunication. The M.Sc. program is described at http://www.fotonik.dtu.dk/English/Education/Int_Msc.aspx, and this link also gives a more general description of DTU Fotonik.

There is a maximum of 30 seats in the Telecommunication Summer University. The applicants are evaluated as decribed below under Entrance Requirements.

Telecommunication Summer University Content

As described above the main content is focused in different projects

Two projects are in the field of optical communication:

  • Optical transmission systems
  • Wireless over fiber

Experimental demonstrations of the key principles of optical communication are done in fully equipped student and research laboratories. The main learning principle is learning-by-doing. The necessary theory will be introduced before and during the project.

  • Modelling and simulation of a communication network

The project will introduce the students to network modelling and simulation using a commercial software tool (OPNET Modeler). In the project, the students must develop and document a model of some communication system, and use the model for studying the performance of the communication system. Knowledge of C/C++ programming is required.

  • Coding technologies for video

The project will introduce the students to video coding and there is a chance to experiment with different systems and see problems and solutions. Knowledge of C/C++ programming is required.

The description of the projects might be improved in the coming time, so please watch the website as it develops.

Evaluation

The two reports are evaluated and if both are approved, the course is declared to be passed. The workload of the course is 5 ECTS credit points and these points will count if the student is admitted to DTU at a later time. For the M.Sc. in Telecommunications, the summer course is a sufficient prerequisite course given the prerequisites described below.

Entrance Requirements

The Summer University is aimed at students in the middle of a 5 year program for an Electronics, a Telecommunication, or a Computer Engineering degree. The students will be selected based upon grades in the courses that are relevant for telecommunication, i.e. such courses as “Computer Science”, “Information & Data transmission”, “Computer networks”, or “Telecommunications”. Note that the selection of projects may depend a little on your academic background.

There is a maximum of 30 seats in the summer university.

Application

Application deadline is April 30, 2012.

Together with the Application Form please enclose documentation for relevant grades (see Entrance Requirements) and English language skills. A statement of purpose - i.e. why do you want to be admitted to the course - should also be included.

Look up and download the Application form.

Fill in the form and send it by surface mail to the address below. An email with all the relevant material will also be accepted.

Scholarships and cost

  • The summer university is free of charge for students from the European union and students from DTU partner universities.
  • There is an accomodation fee of EUR 300. DTU provides the housing.
