DTU Fotonik is the department for Photonics Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark. We welcome applications from Danish and International students, who wish to study at DTU Fotonik on an advanced level. The aim of this program is to train highly qualified engineers to a standard that will make them capable of performing research, development, planning, and analysis within a number of areas in telecommunications. Depending upon the specific selection of courses, the student will get the opportunity to concentrate on development of hardware or software for total telecommunication systems or for individual components. DTU Fotonik and DTU Informatics collaborate in many of these research areas. A comprehensive list is found below.
As one of the first universities in the world, DTU in 1910 commenced an education dedicated to telecommunication. This made the foundation of today’s education in electronics or computer science, but it also evolved as a specialization by itself. Since the year 2000, the teaching has been done exclusively in English. Each year, a little less than one hundred students graduate in this area.
At DTU Fotonik we offer an interesting - and very international - environment for study. We offer excellent facilities in labs and the teaching is done by a highly qualified staff. A special attraction of DTU and DTU Fotonik is the easy access to the teaching staff which is almost always at your disposal. Outside of teaching sessions it is easy to make an appointment for a talk. Another attraction is the hands-on teaching method in many of our courses. You do not just sit at a lecture, but you are engaged by exercises, computer simulations, group work or other similar activities.
The education relates to our research which includes topics such as:
- Internet technology and applications
- ICT convergence and platforms
- ICT design and management
- Mobile services and service architectures
- Architecture, design, and performance optimization of telecommunication networks
- Transmission and switching
- Broadband access networks
- All-optical network elements
- Planning of telecommunication networks
- Compression of data from information sources, e.g. video or speech
- Error-correcting coding
- Mobile communications (both planning and components)
- Software design
- Design of specialized hardware components in VLSI
- Optical component design
The student can specialize in several lines, e.g. systems/networks, hardware design (especially optical devices and components), or software design (including signal processing software). The mandatory courses are offered by DTU Fotonik and DTU Informatics, and DTU Fotonik and DTU Informatics also offer many of the supplementary courses together with other departments at DTU.
