Department of Environmental Engineering (DTU Environment) is a DTU-institution at the highest international level. We are working to develop new environmentally friendly and sustainable technologies and disseminate this knowledge to society and new generations of engineers. Environmental chemistry, both in nature and in environmental engineering processes are important areas. Microbiology is included in all environmental biotechnology.
Moreover, work on issues related to the handling of solid waste and we examine how chemical contaminants from landfills affect the environment.
Water supply, wastewater treatment and water handling in urban areas is another important area for DTU Environment. The effect of climate changes on urban water is investigated.
Water and soil are important but limited resources that society should manage wisely. The Department has considerable expertise in groundwater and surface water, and management of water resources.

DTU Environment's total turnover amounts to some 100 million year, with over two thirds of the funding coming from external sources. There are about 180 employees at DTU Environment, of which more than 60 are doctoral students. We have employees with 25 different nationalities.
The academic breadth and the multidisciplinary approach to solving complex environmental problems is reflected in the scientific staffing profile. DTU Environment employs engineers, chemists, biologists, geologists and physicists who work with a broad group of Danish and international partners, for example Public authorities, consultants, manufacturers, and the world's leading universities and research groups within our area.
The Institute has modern and well equipped research laboratories, which are also involved in many teaching-related activities.
The vast majority of exam projects / theses, carried out by DTU Environment, are based on independent, research-based laboratory and / or field work.
In addition to laboratory facilities available DTU Environment also have advanced equipment for field work and the necessary computer facilities to solve even complex modeling.
