Study Planning
As a student at Department of Civil Engineering - DTU Byg you have the opportunity to influence your study. When you are designing your study plan there are a group of obligatory basic courses that gives you the theoretical background for continuing with advanced courses in your field. Some examples of advanced courses you can follow at Department of Civil Engineering - DTU Byg is Steel Structures, Fire dynamics, Sustainable Buildings, Planning and Control of Building Projects etc. Read more about international studies at DTU here.
Courses
The courses at Department of Civil Engineering - DTU Byg has a high theoretical level and in addition, a number of the courses combines this with practice in the laboratories or even field work. The work in the laboratories includes materials testing and field work can be experienced in courses like Geology and Soil Mechanics, Arctic Technology and Sustainable Cities. In our courses the teaching consists of a mix of lessons and exercises. During the exercises you will typically work in groups on larger projects. The combination of classes, exercises and experiments helps you as a student to gain a better theoretical understanding along with knowledge of the use in practice.
Experimental Facilities
Department of Civil Engineering - DTU Byg has access to a great deal of experimental facilities in our two large experimetnal halls in building 119. The equipment here can e.g. be used for testing of strain, stress and stability of concrete, wood and steel. Besides this building 119 contains facilities for experiments on indoor environment and fire testing and special equipment for specific projects. Another facility in building 119 is our concrete laboratory for casting and cutting of concrete. In building 118 we also have two laboratories and smaller special set-up in the basement. Furthermore we have a big outdoor area for experiments. In this area we are testing solar heating panels, durability of e.g. concrete and tiles and measurements of heat loss through different construction exposed to real outdoor climate.
Special Courses
If you have special interests that are not fulfilled by ordinary courses you have the possibility to do a special course on the topic of your interest. The opportunity is highly appreciated and used by our current students. To get started you need to have a supervisor, usually one you know from courses you attended, and you need to have an idea for a topic. You can also contact the supervisor you want to work and hear about their current projects and ideas for topics. In special courses you make the planning of the course in cooperation with the supervisor, giving you the possibility to greatly influence your project. Sometimes there may even be an option for cooperation with a company. |
