1. Who is required to pay tuition fees?
EU/EEA citizens are not required to pay tuition fees to enrol in degree programs in Denmark as their tuition fees are financed by the Danish government. This includes the following countries: Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Netherlands, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Portugal, Spain, UK, Sweden, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Cypress, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.
All other countries are defined as non-EU/EEA countries, and as of August 1st 2006, their citizens must pay tuition fees at institutions of higher education in Denmark.
However, the following non-EU/EEA citizens will continue to be exempt from paying tuition fees:
-
Students studying in Denmark in exchange for Danish students taking their places at their home universities according to agreements between Danish universities and one or more universities abroad.
-
Students with a permanent residence permit or a time-limited residence permit issued with a possibility of permanent residence in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden.
-
Students with a residence permit granted on the grounds of family reunification.
-
Students who have dual citizenship in both an EU country and a non-EU country.
-
Students who have been granted government scholarships in accordance with s. 19 (6) of the Danish Act on Universities (see section 4 below).
-
Students enrolled in BSc, BEng and MSc programs at DTU before August 1st 2006, and who are still active students.
2. Fee for full degree students enrolled in a DTU study program
The tuition fee for paying students enrolled in a DTU study program is DKK 102,500/EUR 13,500 per academic year. However, the six-month traineeship portion of the B Eng costs DKK 10,600.
All prices are based on the Danish National Budget for 2006.
3. Fee for paying guest students (non-degree)
Guest students from non-EU/EEA countries who are admitted to DTU without an exchange agreement are required, under Danish law, to pay tuition fees.
The Section for International Affairs (hereafter referred to as International Affairs) at DTU does not normally admit students without an exchange agreement.
However, the departments at DTU admit a number of non-EU/EEA students without exchange agreements. These students often come to DTU through contacts in the academic community and generally work on some sort of project rather than attend classes (possibly combined with one or two courses). The departments must secure housing for these students on their own.
According to current legislation, DTU is now required to charge tuition fees for these students, cf. Act on Amending the Act on Universities (the University Act); Act no. 283 of March 31st 2006, § 1, stk. 4-8.
The fee for paying guest students is DKK 51,250/EUR 6,750 per semester or fraction thereof. In the course of a semester, these students have the right to participate in all the activities they wish that are offered within the program (project and/or courses). Students who participate in activities equalling less than 30 credit points per semester must also pay DKK 51,250/EUR 6,750 per semester.
Paying guest students are subject to the same terms of payment and rules regarding their course of study as paying students enrolled in standard programs (cf. terms of payment below).
For guest students from other Danish universities, agreements are made ad hoc in order to avoid students enrolled in, say, the University of Copenhagen paying double fees.
4. Government-financed tuition fee waivers
It is expected that a limited number of government-financed tuition fee waivers will be available to highly qualified applicants to the MSc programs at DTU in 2011. All applicants who applied before the deadline of March 15 will be under consideration for the tuition fee waivers. Successful candidates will be informed directly. Students who do not receive a grant letter have not been awarded the tuition fee waiver.
5. Terms of payment
5.1. Payment deadlines and terms
Tuition fees must be paid per semester and it is not possible to pay in instalments (e.g. two instalments per semester). Students may also choose to pay for an entire academic year all at once.
The payment deadlines are:
|
BSc in technical science
B Eng |
MSc degree programs |
|
1 September
for autumn semester |
1 June
for autumn semester |
|
1 February
for spring semester |
1 December
for spring semester |
Generally, payment is made for the completion of a total of 180 credit points (BSc), 210 credit points (B Eng) and 120 credit points (MSc), respectively, with a normal workload of 30 credit points per semester.
In the course of a semester, students have the right to complete as many activities offered within the program (projects and/or courses) as they wish. Students enrolled in BSc, B Eng or MSc programs who complete activities amounting to less than 30 credit points per semester must also pay DKK 51,250/EUR 6,750 per semester. The fee for the traineeship portion of the B Eng is DKK 10,600/EUR 1,420 per semester.
Students who have not completed their studies within the normal period of study have the right to complete their studies in the course of another academic year without paying tuition fees.
Students who have not completed their studies in the normal period of study + one year (i.e. by 1 September) must subsequently pay DKK 51,250/EUR 6,750 per semester or fraction thereof. If the traineeship portion of the B Eng is completed after the normal study period + one year, the student must pay DKK 10,600/EUR 1,420.
Students who complete their studies in less than the normal number of semesters must pay tuition fees for the full number of semesters plus any traineeship period.
5.2. Students who do not pay on time
First-semester students who have not paid their tuition fees on time will not be issued a student ID card until the tuition fees have been paid.
For other semesters, students who do not pay their tuition fees on time shall be withdrawn from the study administration system and will no longer be able to enrol for courses or examinations. When the outstanding fees have been paid the student should contact the International Affairs Office for further information.
5.3. Leave of absence
Paying students are subject to the general rules at DTU regarding leave of absence. However, paying students must submit an application for leave of absence to Study Information/International Affairs no later than 14 days prior to payment deadline in order to avoid paying tuition fees for that semester. Tuition fees will not be refunded to students who commence a leave of absence after semester start, but who have not applied for leave of absence prior to payment deadline.
In case of serious illness or death (self, partner or member of immediate family), it will be possible to apply for a refund of the tuition fees for the semester already commenced. The application (including attached documentation) for a refund of tuition fees must be submitted in writing to Study Information/International Affairs no later than three weeks into the period of leave. The Dean of the program in question shall make the decision in the matter.
In connection with a leave of absence, it is not possible to obtain a refund of tuition fees for a semester that has already commenced (e.g. if performance at examinations does not live up to expectations) except in case of serious illness and death (self, partner or member of immediate family).
5.4. Withdrawal from studies
Paying students are subject to the general rules at DTU regarding withdrawal from studies. However, paying students wishing to withdraw from their studies must submit an application in writing to Study Information/International Affairs no later than 14 days prior to semester start in order to avoid paying tuition fees for that semester.
5.5. When/if studies are resumed
When studies are resumed after a leave of absence or after withdrawal from studies, full tuition fees must be paid, regardless of whether the student has previously attended (but not completed) courses that are a part of the program after the leave of absence/resumption of studies.
5.6. Refunds
First-semester students who are not yet enrolled at DTU
Students who have paid tuition fees, but who for various reasons (e.g. did not qualify for a residence permit) are not enrolled at DTU, can receive a full refund of their tuition fees after 1 October/1 March.
First-semester students who have commenced the first semester
Students who drop out of their studies before November 1st /April 1st of their first semester at DTU have the right to a refund of 50 per cent of their tuition fees, excl. bank charges, regardless of the reason for dropping out. Only students who submit a written withdrawal request to Study Information/International Affairs no later than November 1st /April 1st of their first semester at DTU may receive a refund of 50 per cent of their tuition fees, excl. bank charges.
Other cases
In case of serious illness or death (self, partner or member of immediate family), it will be possible to apply for a refund of the tuition fees for the semester already commenced. The application (including attached documentation) for a refund of tuition fees must be submitted in writing to Study Information/International Affairs no later than three weeks after the request to withdraw from studies has been submitted to Study Information/International Affairs. The Dean of the program in question shall make the decision in the matter.
Students who have paid for a full academic year and who withdraw from their studies no later than 14 days prior to the start of the second semester of the academic year have the right to a refund of the tuition fees, excl. bank charges, for the second semester.
Tuition fees will not normally be refunded to students after November 1st /April 1st of their first semester at DTU. However, written applications for refunds shall be considered in special cases (i.e. in cases where the applicant can prove that DTU has not lived up to its obligations). The application must be submitted in writing to Study Information/International Affairs. The Dean of the program in question shall make the decision in the matter.
Applications for refund of tuition fees that are submitted more than one year after payment will not be considered.
6. Studying abroad
Students who live abroad for a period of time (e.g. in connection with studies at a foreign university) as part of their studies at DTU, must still pay tuition fees to DTU.
7. Change of course of studies
Students enrolled in study programs have the right to change their course of studies in accordance with the rules stated in the Study Handbook of DTU.
Students who change to a different program are normally required to pay full tuition fees for the normal study years. Furthermore, they must pay full tuition fees for studies that extend beyond the normal study period + one year.
Students who have changed to a different program and who might complete their studies in less than the normal number of semesters (e.g. due to credit transfer from the previous program to the “new” program) are only required to pay tuition fees for each semester commenced.
8. Credits
Credit point transfers from home university (only for students enrolled in MSc programs):
Students who are enrolled in the MSc programs at DTU and who wish to transfer credit points for courses taken at their home universities can, with the approval of the program coordinators, transfer a maximum of 30 course credit points.
The student must pay tuition fees according to a proportional calculation. The first instalment/s is/are to be paid in full, and the total fee is to be adjusted in the final instalment. One ECTS (credit) point costs DKK 1,710 (EUR 225).
Credit point transfers from DTU:
An MSc student who has previously been a guest student at DTU can, with the approval of the program coordinators, transfer a maximum of 60 credit points earned at DTU. The rules for credit point transfers are described in more detail in the Study Handbook. The tuition fees will be adjusted according to a proportional calculation. The first instalment/s is/are to be paid in full, and the total fee is to be adjusted in the final instalment. One ECTS (credit) point costs DKK 1,710 (EUR 225).
9. Tuition fees for Open University
To ensure uniform fees for the programs at DTU, the tuition fee for Open University courses is also DKK 102,500 per year. The fee is, thus, DKK 1,710 per ECTS credit point.
This fee applies to all BSc, B Eng and MSc courses.
For part-time MSc programs, the fee is based on teaching rates + building rates as well as user payment. The fee will vary from program to program.
Please note that the tuition fee for Open University students is to be paid per course, but the fee for full-time studies is to be paid per semester.
Payment deadlines and terms for Open University
Open University maintains its current deadlines and terms, however the fee for students from non-EU/EEC countries who have not received residential permits of indefinite duration or temporary residence permits with the possibility of obtaining permanent residence in Denmark shall increase according to the teaching and building rates listed in the rate catalogue, cf. the above.
User fees entail the right to attend classes and sit for the tests and examinations associated with the course in question. The user fee must be paid before a student may participate in a course.
User fees are paid once a semester. If the user fees are not paid by the payment deadline, your enrolment in the course will be automatically cancelled without further notice. The payment deadline is stated on the bill. Once the bill has been paid, the registration is binding and the amount cannot be refunded.
