What is The Flexible Master’s program?
A Master’s program is a part-time vocational education with a prescribed period of study of 60 ECTS. The program works as continuing education with the majority of the Master-students maintaining a job while they study.
At DTU, it is possible to be enrolled in an individually planned Master’s program with a clear profile and the option of combining elements within different established programs. We call this program ‘The Flexible Master’.
A Flexible master can be developed within all the disciplines at DTU and you will be active in the development of your programme.
Is a Flexible Master’s program the same as a Master of Science program?
While enrolled in a Flexible Master’s program, you will follow advanced courses and at the end obtain the academic title, Master. In the Master of Science program you also follow advanced courses and you obtain the academic title and the abbreviation, Master of Science (M. Sc.). However, despite the similarities of courses and titles, the two educations are not the same. One of the main differences is that in order to be enrolled an applicant for a Flexible Master’s program must have at least two years of relevant work experience in addition to having a Bachelor degree. This level of work experience is not necessary in order to be enrolled in a Master of Science program. On the other hand, a Master of Science program has a prescribed period of study of 120 ECTS which is two years of fulltime studies.
A Flexible Master’s program, combined with the two years of previous work experience, has a vocational profile which the Master of Science program lacks.
A Master of Science program has a higher academic level than a Flexible Master’s program.
And the price?
You have to pay to be enrolled in a part-time education. The price depends on the curriculum you composite. You can read more about our prices.
How to get started
If you wish to apply for enrolment in a Flexible Master’s program, you should send (by e-mail or in a letter) the following to the office for continuing education (contact details at the bottom of this page):
-
A brief personal application where you clearly specify the field in which you wish to be educated. You are more than welcome to mention specific courses that interest you.
-
Your CV
-
Proof of minimum two years of relevant work experience
-
A copy of your residence permit (only if you are not an EU/EEA citizen)
When the aforementioned documents have been received at DTU, a preliminary screening of whether you meet the admission requirements will be carried out. Should the admission requirements appear to have been met your papers will be sent to the Institute matching your field of interest.
At the Institute you will have a supervisor assigned to you and together you will develop the individual education plan. Once the education plan has been approved and signed by the supervisor, the study board of the institute and the Dean, you are ready for enrolment in a Flexible Master’s program. Enrolment is only possible at the start of a semester.
However, you must bear in mind that it can take as much as three months from the receipt of your application at DTU before an education plan is finished. Should you wish to further educate yourself but being unable to make an enrolment in a Flexible Master’s program in time, you should consider following a few courses at Open University.
What must the education plan contain?
The individual education plan is developed in accordance with the study plan.
The education plan must include the following:
- The admission
- The academic profile of the education, including the main field and the level of competence
- Combination of courses and their ECTS-points
