University rankings have become an important parameter in the global competition between universities to attract the most talented researchers and students. However, rankings should be used with caution. There is, in fact, a long list of different rankings – each employing its own methodology and evaluative parameters. Below is an overview of DTU’s current standing in various rankings.

THE World University Rankings

 

The THE World University Rankings is developed by Times Higher Education in cooperation with Thomson Reuters. The ranking is based on 13 indicators covering five broad performance categories to reflect the three core missions of a university: teaching, research and knowledge transfer. The five categories are:  

  • Teaching – the learning environment
  • Citations – research influence
  • Research – volume, income and reputation
  • International mix – staff, students and research
  • Industry income – innovation

The THE World University Rankings publishes data for the top 400 universities.

The Times Higher Education Top 20 list is based on data extracted from Thomson Reuters' Essential Science Indicators database and covers the period January 2000 to August 2010. The database includes scientific journal articles and reviews indexed by Thomson Reuters.

CWTS and Leiden Ranking

 

The Leiden Ranking is developed by a team of researchers at the Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS), Leiden University, Netherlands.

 

CWTS has more than 20 years of experience with the development of quantitative indicators for the assessment and benchmarking of research.

 

The centre employs approx. 25 researchers.    

 

 

The Proportion Top 10% Publications indicator

 

The proportion of publications of a university that - compared with other similar publications - belong to the top 10% most frequently cited. Publications are considered similar if they are published in the same field and have the same publication year and document type.

 

 

University-Industry Research Cooperation Scoreboard

 

The foundation of the scoreboard is a list of the 500 largest universities in the world, based on Web of Science publications in the period 2006-2008. The universities’ performance regarding cooperation with industry partners is measured in terms of the number of co-publications with private sector research organizations.

 

For each university a total University Industry Co-publications (UIC) intensity score is calculated. In addition, each university’s UIC intensity score is broken down into five broad fields of science:

  • Natural sciences
  • Engineering sciences
  • Life sciences
  • Medical sciences
  • Social sciences and humanities

The report "Bibliometric Indicators for the Nordic Universities" is developed by NordForsk, an organisation under the Nordic Council of Ministers. 

 

The citation rates analysis is based on field-normalized citation rates for the period 2005-2009. The analysis covers  a total of 58 universities and university hospitals.

The QS World University Rankings is developed by the international career and education network, QS (Quacquarelli Symonds Ltd).

 

The ranking is based on six indicators to present a broad view of the relative strengths of the world's leading universities. The indicators are:

The QS World University Rankings evaluates over 700 universities and ranks the top 400.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities is developed by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy. More than 1,000 universities are part of the analysis, while data is published on the web for the top 500 universities.

 

The ranking is based on the following six indicators:  

  • Alumni of an institution winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals
  • Staff of an institution winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals
  • Highly cited researchers in 21 broad subject categories
  • Articles published in Nature and Science
  • Articles indexed in Science Citation Index-expanded and Social Science Citation Index
  • Per capita academic performance of an institution

The Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World Universities is developed by the National Taiwan University.

 

A bibliometric analysis is performed for each university based on ISI Web of Knowledge data for the period 2000-2010. The ranking is based on eight indicators, covering the following three criteria:

  • Research productivity
  • Research impact
  • Research excellence

Ranking Web of World Universities

 

Ranking Web of World Universities is developed by Cybermetrics Lab, a research group under the National Research Council, Spain.

 

The ranking is based on four web indicators reflecting the web presence of each of the more than 20,000 higher education institutions analyzed:

  • Size: number of pages recovered from search engines (Google, Yahoo, Bing)
  • Visibility: number of unique external links received by a site
  • Rich files: number of documents (rich files) in a web domain
  • Scholar: number of publications in Google Scholar
