Food sciences and medicotechnology

At DTU, we conduct research into technologies for improving the properties of food and other products from the agricultural industry. We conduct research into the production of oils and fats e.g. and how they can be chemically changed to improve their nutritional value. We also focus on general improvements to the quality of food by designing tailored production systems that handle raw materials with care. At DTU, we also work on the hygienic design of equipment to improve production hygiene.

Medicotechnology is a broad research area with a common theme of technology used to improve the treatment of diseases. Medicotechnology covers e.g. research into ultrasound treatment for diagnostics, applied research into hearing and biosensors.

At DTU, ultrasound research is focused mostly at the Center for Fast Ultrasound Imaging which in addition to the researchers from DTU has partners from other Danish universities, research hospitals, universities outside Denmark and a number of businesses working in medicotechnology. The centre’s research is used to develop medical diagnostics and is expected to give a large number of benefits in relation to existing ultrasound scanners. The results can be used generally in the field of ultrasound, as the new techniques give a better resolution. This means smaller anatomical details can be examined and clearer pictures can be produced, resulting in improved diagnoses.

The new techniques can also be used to study the function of the heart and to examine patients with cancer, as the blood circulation around tumours can be more easily revealed and studied.
